In an exciting announcement for music enthusiasts, Zolani Mahola, the beloved former lead singer of South African band Freshlyground, is set to headline a free concert at Greenmarket Square on March 25, 2026. This performance marks the official launch of the 23rd Cape Town International Jazz Festival, an event that promises to transform the square into a pulsating hub of jazz and cultural celebration.

The concert at Greenmarket Square will be the first of its kind for the festival, which has built a solid reputation as Africa's largest jazz event. For local residents and visitors, it offers a unique opportunity to experience top-notch performances without the barrier of ticket prices. With Mahola taking centre stage, audiences can expect her signature blend of heartfelt lyrics and dynamic stage presence, setting the tone for the stellar line-up that will follow.

Known for her powerful voice and infectious energy, Mahola has captivated global audiences with hits like 'Doo Be Doo' and 'Jikele Maweni.' Since her departure from Freshlyground, she has pursued a solo career, in which she continues to emphasise her roots and the importance of cultural expression. The concert at Greenmarket Square is not only a chance for Mahola to shine, but it also reflects her commitment to community engagement and cultural upliftment.

“Zolani's performance will celebrate our heritage and the joy that music brings to our lives.”

"Zolani’s performance will be a celebration of our heritage and a reminder of the joy that music can bring to our lives," said a spokesperson for the festival. "We are thrilled to have her lead the charge this year and set the stage for an unforgettable festival weekend."

The Cape Town International Jazz Festival, renowned for its diverse programme of international and local artists, has positioned itself as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural calendar. Over the years, it has attracted a mix of both local and international audiences, fostering a spirit of unity through music. The festival features a plethora of performances across various genres, workshops, and community projects, making it a significant contributor to the city's economy and cultural landscape.

The upcoming concert will see Greenmarket Square come alive on a Saturday afternoon, inviting both locals and visitors to partake in the vibrant atmosphere. The festival has consistently championed accessibility to high-quality performances, with free events like this one aimed at eliminating economic barriers and promoting cultural appreciation.

In past years, the festival has proven to be a catalyst for tourism in Cape Town, drawing in jazz lovers from around the globe. As travel restrictions ease post-pandemic, the upcoming festival weekend is expected to attract significant numbers, boosting both local businesses and the overall economy.

In addition to Mahola, this year’s festival line-up promises to be exciting, with strong representation from South African artists and notable acts from around the world. Details on additional performers will be announced in the lead-up to the event, generating buzz within the artistic community and jazz lovers alike.

Notably, Cape Town's cultural scene stands poised for a revival, and events such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival play a pivotal role in this renewal.

As part of the festival tradition, the community is encouraged to gather at the square, tapping into the spirit of camaraderie that music fosters. The launch concert is anticipated not just as a musical event but as a gathering of people coming together to share in the rhythm of Cape Town.

Local artists, businesses, and food vendors will also have the opportunity to showcase their talents and offerings during the concert. This commitment to promoting local culture aligns with the festival’s objectives of nurturing a vibrant arts community and supporting the local economy.

Mahola’s headlining performance is positioned to be a magical experience, as she draws on the rich tapestry of sounds that make up South African jazz. The event is expected to unify people from all walks of life, reinforcing the festival's ethos of collective joy through music.

As the countdown to March 25 begins, excitement is palpable amongst residents and visitors alike, with the promise of a cultural extravaganza that appeals to jazz aficionados and casual listeners alike. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival continues to stand as a testament to the transformative power of music, and this year’s free concert at Greenmarket Square is set to herald another chapter in its illustrious history.

Why This Matters

The significance of free access to high-quality musical performances cannot be overstated. In a city like Cape Town, where economic disparities exist, initiatives such as this concert not only democratise access to culture but also cultivate a sense of community and connection among diverse populations.

By featuring prominent artists like Zolani Mahola, the festival does more than just entertain; it nurtures the city's cultural identity and reflects Cape Town’s rich musical heritage. Moreover, the positive economic impact of such events underscores their importance in supporting local businesses and sustaining the arts in the long run.

I have been going to this festival since the early days and it is wonderful to see it making music accessible to everyone. It is just a shame I will be back in London by the time the concert actually takes place.

The Cape Town Jazz Festival has been a staple for decades, though it has evolved quite a bit since its inception. Bringing someone of her calibre into the city centre might just be the shot in the arm the event needs to attract a younger audience.

While I love Zolani's work, I do wonder about the crowd management for a free event of this size. It is a lovely idea, but security will certainly have their work cut out for them on that day.

Absolutely brilliant news. I saw Freshlyground live years ago and she has such a powerful stage presence, so a free concert at Greenmarket Square is a fantastic way to open the festival.
